Residential extension integrated design — DMV Residence

Not simply an addition, but a residential extension integrated design conceived for everyday life. Indeed, the executive design of the DMV residence began with the need to fully rethink how an existing space is inhabited, rather than merely adding square metres.

Residential extension integrated design: the three-level structure

This residential extension unfolds across three levels. Consequently, the new volume engages in dialogue with the existing building in a functional, contemporary way, following an integrated design approach that brings together architecture, building systems and energy performance into a single coherent vision. In other words, rather than juxtaposing two separate structures, it makes them work as one unified system.

Sustainability, first of all, sits at the heart of the intervention. Indeed, the project built the energy upgrade of the existing structure into the new layout from the earliest concept stage, thereby avoiding any trade-off between technical performance and spatial quality. As a result, the building reduces consumption without giving up everyday comfort.

The spaces lived every day

An integrated design, however, doesn’t end when the keys are handed over. Instead, it’s measured by how the spaces are lived in, day after day. For instance, the open-plan living area becomes the heart of the home, the point where daily life gathers.

Meanwhile, the professional kitchen answers a precise need: whoever lives in this house actually cooks, not just entertains occasionally. Specifically, its continuous surfaces and work layouts follow the logic of professional kitchens, designed for daily movement before aesthetics.

The private spa, in turn, holds a strategic position within the new layout. Rather than sitting as an isolated room, it engages with natural light and the home’s open spaces. Similarly, dedicated walk-in wardrobes complete the sleeping area, optimising dressing space without taking square metres away from the living areas.

Finally, a terrace facing the Apulian countryside completes the outdoor spaces. Here, above all, the continuity between indoor and outdoor, a recurring theme in Kino Workshop’s work, finds its clearest expression.

Overall, this approach, where every technical choice serves a broader vision of how the home should be lived in, is what sets a well-designed residential extension apart from a simple volumetric addition. In short, integrated design guides every decision, from structure to systems, down to the furnishing details and the spaces the family lives in every day, in every season of the year.
